Our aerial silks tutorial video covers three common entries as well as important cues and training and teaching tips for this challenging skill.
We teach this to aerial silk students who are already comfortable with easier active backbends on the silks, including skills like Front Balance and Back Balance in the Knot. Side Back Balance is incredibly useful for students starting to learn back balance skills on the silks or rope, and for those who are working on advanced skills like Hip Key Roll Up.
Side Back Balance requires finding a strong active arched body position and at the same time turning the weight into the fabric and up towards the ceiling. This is done by C-shaping, which means creating a C-shape with the entire body to fold around the fabric. This page includes many resources to help build strength, mobility, and body awareness for C-shaping skills.
