Single Knee Hang on the Side of the Hoop is one of our favorite skills to perform, demo, and teach. It has a gravity defying look, almost like the skill shouldn’t work. Most students who are first learning the skill are worried there won’t be enough support and they will slip out of the skill, but then the reality is when they are in the skill the experience is there is too much friction and support and all they want to do is get out of the skill.
The primary support in this skill is the knee hook, and there can be a lot of skin burn type friction on the leg. We have two variations of the skill, one with a bent leg thigh shelf and one in a gazelle shape with a little bit of hip support. We always teach the thigh shelf variation first, because the thigh shelf is a great self spotting support and exiting down to the thigh is a great way to exit the skill quickly.
The thigh shelf variation has two options. It can be entered with an additional arm support or no arm support. We almost always teach the arm support version first.
