In our aerial silk classes we love teaching our aerial silks students the basics of spinning in the air with the silks, but we approach it slowly because we’ve noticed that oftentimes students will say that they either love spinning or they hate it. We always want all of our aerial students to be inspired so when we introduce spinning concepts in our classes we always give our students a chance to experience it safely and then a chance to opt out if they don’t like it. As teachers we do this by starting super slow and by only introducing it for a few minutes at a time in a class. And by giving our students lots of options to consider.
Our approach helps students who aren’t fans of spinning to build up tolerance slowly, and it gives them the opportunity to opt out without missing out. We let our enthusiastic students know that once they’re comfortable with the basics then they can always choose to add spin to other skills and sequences they’re learning.
Our aerial silks teaching tutorial video for Spinning Basics in the fabric knot covers the basic beginner concepts of spinning that we teach to our aerial silk students, including how to cleanly generate a spin by using the tail, how to change the speed of the spin by changing the body shapes, and how to come to floor slowly to avoid stopping the spin too fast, as well as some tips to reduce dizziness and increase joy.
