Training actions on the floor is a great way to succeed faster in the air. When we take a skill to the ground we can focus on building strength by doing lots of reps or working with more resistance without having to take the time to do the whole skill over and over. We can also focus on learning pathways or coordination without overly fatiguing our muscles to keep us in the air. Being on the ground simplifies complex skills so that we aren’t distracted by everything else going on while we are up in the air.
Ground drills can be the answer to the Catch-22 of learning aerial.
If you have great technique you don’t need as much strength. If you have a lot of strength then you can muscle through with less great technique. To get great technique it helps to have a lot of strength in the right places.
