Retractions and Retractions to Plank on Aerial Hoop are two of our favorite conditioning drills. Retractions are great for connecting students to their back muscles. We use them as a warm-up skill and troubleshooting drill to get students in touch with the muscles on their back that will help them pull themselves up in the air. They are also a great warm-up for an arched body position.
Retractions to Plank help students understand how to engage both their shoulders and their abs at the same time. The back and abs muscles can work together to not only create a tight, straight body line, but also eventually create complex and powerful muscle pathways to defy gravity. They are really useful for improving students’ form in aerial inversions, especially straddle ups.
