Half Back Straddle is a drill we use in our beginner and intermediate level aerial silk classes for building core strength and control. It’s easy to scale up or down depending on the student’s comfort level with the skill.

For new students we encourage them to hold it and stay strong with the cues we give in this video, and for more experienced students we give them options to make it more challenging like finding different leg shapes and working balance.

This is a good drill for teachers to have in their back pocket because if a new student has trouble inverting on a knot, setting the knot lower can help. And at the same time, setting the knot lower and working on holding the halfway position can be a way to challenge a beginner student who is already comfortable in back straddle.
