Achieving a strong straddle up in the air is a long term project for most adult aerialists on any apparatus. It can be very challenging to achieve, but the rewards are that so many aerial skills become easier and many aerial sling skills become possible once that straddle up has been mastered.
In our aerial sling curriculum we start our students working towards their straddle ups right away, but we take our time and we only teach skills that come from a straddle up much later in our aerial sling curriculum.
This aerial sling tutorial video includes a lot of information, progressions, and drills that we use to progress our students from a back straddle in the bottom of the sling to a straddle up in the air above the bottom of the sling. Specific drills included are Back Straddle to Lock Off, Back Straddle to Straddle Up, Seated to Straddle Up, Seated on One Thigh to Straddle Up, Straddle Up From Standing with the sling in front of, behind, and beside the body, and Straddle Up from standing on the sling and from Box Pose.
