Standing Side Lean, also sometimes called Hip Tip, is a staple of our level 1 aerial silks curriculum and it’s a skill many of our beginner students learn right away, sometimes in their very first class. New students love how it looks magical, and we love how it gets students used to supporting weight in their legs.

We use Standing Side Lean to teach new students about lifting up away from gravity, initiating a skill with the legs even if it looks like it’s being initiated with the arms or torso, and how to turn into the sensation of support. This skill relates to skills like Hip Key as the action of turning the hip crease into the fabric to create support comes up again and again in other skills.
