The Hip Hop Knee Hang to Standing Y Sequence on Aerial Hoop has a good serving of some of the more complex hoop skills. It is clearly an exciting performative sequence, but it also works as a teaching sequence because it tests students’ movement memory. Fortunately this sequence has fairly straightforward transitions, so students who can do each skill in isolation will probably find the sequence relatively easy. The biggest challenge in this sequence is keeping the complex steps all organized in their heads, and it definitely requires endurance too.

While it may look like there are a lot of skills in the sequence, we cue our students to think of it as a series of different ways to explore the Standing Y. It really makes the sequence feel much simpler if students can think of it as a fancy transition down into a Standing Y and a fancy transition up out of a Standing Y.
