The Low and High Mermaid Calibration on Aerial Hoop is a leg calibration that gets students to focus on sliding their hips up high on the hoop and sliding the hips back down low all without using an extra hand touch. While this looks like it will be easy and obvious it can be quite difficult.
Our leg calibrations are designed to get students to steer and move the hoop with their legs rather than using their hands, so while a hand touch may be easier, we think moving between the two positions without using the second hand is more efficient and better technique. It also allows for smoother, more magical looking transitions when used within more challenging skills.
Low and high outside mermaid leg calibration can be frustrating because it looks like it should be so easy. Starting with smaller ranges of motion and building to larger ranges of motion is a great way to troubleshoot this leg calibration.
