A Side Ball Roll on Aerial Hoop is a fun and unexpected skill that can seem impossible at first and then feel easy and graceful after some practice. We refer to this type of roll as an illusion roll, because the body isn’t moving around the hoop, instead the hoop is moving around the body. The Side Ball Roll can be a forward roll or a backwards roll. This tutorial will cover both variations.
There are a lot of nuances in this roll that will definitely take a little experimenting to perfect on each student. Hoop size and arm length are both relevant to make the skill more consistent. Students should be very comfortable with a one handed Side Ball and be able to hold the shape with some space between their hip and the spanset. Check out the Side Ball tutorial in the building blocks section to learn more about these differences.
