The Single Knee Hook in the Spanset to Standing Y Sequence on Aerial Hoop was developed from an exercise we give to our performers to fully explore positions before moving on. We encourage performers to look into all of the nooks and crannies of a skill to fully utilize supports, make new connections between similar skills and in general spend more time being creative in each position.

Even though we list a number of skills in this sequence, it could be argued that there are only two. The first one would be all of the shapes from a single knee hook in the spanset and the other would be the Standing Y. Once performers know how to explore within a position, they can start tapping into the visual effect of being mesmerizing since it is unclear when one skill ends and another begins because they all blend seamlessly together. While this research can be exhausting, the end result usually makes for much less tiring choreography because there tends to be a lot less up, down, up, down movement which is exhausting.
