This active hip key drill is one that we use to teach students how to lock in a hip key in a more active way, and it’s really important for students working on windmill hip key and working on any skills that involve lifting the torso upright in order to transition, wrap, or spin from a hip key.

This is a sneaky drill that’s fun to do but also demands a lot of work from the core. We use it in our beginner through advanced classes as either conditioning or as a prep for movements that require being more engaged in a hip key.

Once students understand how to be more lifted and engaged while holding a hip key, they’ll progress onto more advanced skills like hip key thread throughs, spins, wraps, and other variations much more easily.
