Hip Key Layanna is one of the first hip key skills that we teach our students, once they are comfortable in a basic hip key or the Footlock to Hip Key entry that we teach. This skill is very supported, very creative, and the entrance and exit build strength and endurance as well.

We typically teach this skill at the beginning of our intermediate level aerial silk curriculum. For students who have spent time moving around in the fabric knot or sling, this skill often feels natural. Our progressions are focused on building students fan kick strength, and keeping them fully engaged in the Layanna shape.

A Layanna shape does come up in many other skills as well. If refers to having one leg in a straddle shape, and the rest of the body in a back balance position. Mastering the entrance of Hip Key Layanna will actually cause a student to enter directly into this shape, so before our students play and explore in this skill we focus on finding that classic shape through a strong entry.
