Outside Seatbelt is a support where the live end of the fabric is in between the legs, and the tail is wrapped across the lap like the seatbelt. That seatbelt is on the leg side of the live end, and that’s why we call it an outside seatbelt. This support is important to understand because many skills that start in a Same Side Wrap will often end up here, but it’s also a useful support on its own.
There are many ways into an outside seatbelt, and this video explores entering it from the ground, from a straddle up with a knee hook, from a basic stand, and from a same side wrap. Once students are proficient with this support then there are a lot of ways to build on it including Seatbelt Pullover and Seatbelt Cartwheel, and those can be fun additions to put at the bottom of a Star Drop or anytime an aerialist ends up in an Outside Seatbelt.
This support can be introduced to less experienced students and played with from the ground, and more experienced students will make many connections that they can use in choreography since it’s common to often end up in this support when exploring inverted wraps on aerial silks.
